Graphic Design – Quickfire questions: Dave Johnson

After many failed attempts and daring escapes, we finally managed to sit down with our elusive Head of Graphic Design, Dave Johnson, to ask him a few, burning questions. Even more chocolate biscuits were involved…

How long have you worked at Zinco?
I originally started in 2000, worked here for 18 months, accepted a job in Carlisle, quickly realised the error of my ways and was asked to return to Zinco towards the end of 2003. I’ve been here ever since.

Tell us about life before Zinco?
Since I graduated from Cumbria College of Art and Design (now University of Cumbria), I’ve worked as a senior designer in local graphic design studios and a newspaper group, served a ten year sentence managing a busy design team for the local authority, a brief stint as Head of Design for a global holiday company… and now Zinco.

Tell us about your role here at Zinco?
My official job description is far too long and impressive to add here, but I create, I design, I’m custodian of multiple client brands, I project manage, I oversee junior designers, I advise, I innovate, I liaise with clients and suppliers.

Describe one of your proudest moments at Zinco, so far?
So many to choose from… Multiple branding projects for Hayes Garden World – including their award-winning ‘FairyWorld’ summer event, Impact branding, Learnfest branding, to mention just a few.

What makes Zinco an awesome team?
We’re a bunch of multi-talented graphic designers, UI/UX designers, developers, programmers and project managers. At the risk of sounding cheesy, we all love what we do and that’s what really makes the difference.

And finally… tell us two things about yourself we don’t already know?
I have ‘a bit of a guitar problem’ and I hate raw tomato!
